The West Coast main line near Stafford has reopened on time after Network Rail’s orange army completed four days of upgrade work to track and bridges over Christmas. 

Passengers in parts of northern England and Wales are advised to check before travelling as flooding continues to affect rail services.

Major flooding and landslips are disrupting services in some parts of Cumbria, the Tyne Valley, West Yorkshire and the Conwy Valley in Wales.

The railway between Dover Priory and Folkestone Central in Kent is currently closed following severe damage to a sea wall at Dover.

Train passengers in flood-stricken parts of northern England were tonight (Saturday) advised to expect disruptions on the railway tomorrow (Sunday).

Severe rain fall in East Lancashire has led to flooding on the railway in the Walsden area which may affect services due to start up after the Christmas period tomorrow. Passengers are being asked to check before they travel to see if their journey is affected.

A level crossing in Leicestershire which was closed earlier this year due to safety concerns is to be replaced by a new footbridge.
