This area runs from London Euston in the south, through the West Midlands, the north west of England and Cumbria before joining with Scotland at Gretna. It is home to the West Coast Main Line, the busiest mixed use railway in Europe and the main long distance route between England Scotland. It supports the major British cities outside of London – including Birmingham, Manchester and Liverpool, as well as several smaller cities such as Wolverhampton, Stoke, Coventry and Carlisle. Train operators on the route include Avanti West Coast, West Midlands Trains, London North Western, CrossCountry, East Midlands Trains, Southern (GTR), Merseyrail, Northern, TransPennine Express, London Overground, Transport for Wales Rail and Chiltern Railways.
West Coast main line passengers are being warned of major delays after 25,000-volt overhead cables which power trains came down outside London Euston station.
