Network Rail will resume work at Longport this weekend, as part of a £1.4m investment to overhaul the station’s footbridge.

From Saturday 31 October, Network Rail will carry out the remaining upgrade activity to the pedestrian link over the West Coast Main Line, with work expected to be completed by the end of February 2027.

Newly manufactured steelwork for the sides of the bridge, balustrades and safety barriers will be installed as part of the project. This latest phase of work comes after bridge panels – a key component of the structure - had to be remade.

Network Rail is working with Story Contracting to deliver the upgrades, which are designed to enhance the safety and resilience of the footbridge.

To allow the work to be carried out safely, the footbridge will be closed overnight from 11pm on Saturdays until 9am on Sundays between 31 October 2026 and 28 February 2027. The bridge will also be fully closed from Monday 30 November to Friday 18 December 2026 inclusive, with pedestrian access restricted again during further planned work in February.

Rail services at Longport station will be unaffected during the closure of the bridge.

Andy Johnson, Project Manager at Network Rail, said: “We’re pleased to be back on site to complete the remaining upgrades to Longport station’s footbridge and would like to thank residents and rail users for their patience while we worked with Story Contracting to remanufacture a key component of the structure.

“While most of the work will be carried out when trains aren’t running, the footbridge will be closed for three weeks in February. An alternative route will be in place for pedestrians, and rail passengers are advised to leave extra time for their journeys to the station.”

About Network Rail

We own, operate and develop Britain's railway infrastructure; that's 20,000 miles of track, 30,000 bridges, tunnels and viaducts and the thousands of signals, level crossings and stations. We run 20 of the UK's largest stations while all the others, over 2,500, are run by the country's train operating companies.

Usually, there are almost five million journeys made in the UK and over 600 freight trains run on the network. People depend on Britain's railway for their daily commute, to visit friends and loved ones and to get them home safe every day. Our role is to deliver a safe and reliable railway, so we carefully manage and deliver thousands of projects every year that form part of the multi-billion pound Railway Upgrade Plan, to grow and expand the nation's railway network to respond to the tremendous growth and demand the railway has experienced - a doubling of passenger journeys over the past 20 years.
