Work to extend the platforms at five railway stations in West Yorkshire begins

Network Rail and Northern are working together to carry out improvements to five railway stations in West Yorkshire as part of the Great North Rail Project.

From the beginning of December Network Rail will begin work to extend the platforms at Featherstone, Pontefract Monkhill, Knottingley, Pontefract Tanshelf and Streethouse to accommodate newer and longer trains which will call at the stations.

To minimise disruption to passengers, the bulk of the work will be carried out overnight, However, to allow some of the work to be carried out safely, there will be some disruption to services on Sunday 20 January 2019, Sunday 27 January 2019 and Sunday 3 February 2019.

The work is part of the wider Great North Rail Project which is delivering a multi-billion-pound package of improvements for customers across the north of England.

Rob McIntosh, Route Managing Director at Network Rail, said: “Over the next two weeks work begins at five railway stations in the Pontefract area and we would like to thank passengers for their patience whilst this takes place.

“The platform extensions will ensure we can continue to provide a railway which meets the needs of the communities and economies we serve in years to come. We look forward to passengers reaping the benefits of more spacious, more frequent and longer trains which will provide more people with opportunities to travel.”
