WINNERS - ST FRANCESCA GABRINI PRIMARY SCHOOL
- Region & Route:
- South East
St Francesca Gabrini Primary School were outright winners of Network Rail’s regional Under 11 six-a-side football finals last Wednesday in Norwich. The school, who won every game without conceding a goal, were representing Millwall football club.
The tournament was part of Network Rail’s national Football in the Community scheme.
Dave Palmer, Regional Manager for Football in the Community said:
“The players were full of enthusiasm for representing their school, club and community. All the games were played with an excellent spirit. Seven out of the nine teams are funded by Network Rail on a local level. This makes a tremendous difference.”
Football in the Community is a nationwide programme where staff work enthusiastically with football clubs running coaching sessions and tournaments to promote railway safety in local communities and to help highlight the dangers of and to deter railway crime.
Keeping young people motivated and occupied is always a challenge and that's why Football in the Community is such a worthwhile initiative.
Football - 2
Every year, over 90% of all reported acts of vandalism on the railway are committed by young people who are often bored, disillusioned and at a loose end. Through a £1 million investment, Network Rail and Football in the Community work together on fun and enjoyable activities for over a million kids across the country every year. Safety is our goal and Football in the Community helps us achieve it.
About Network Rail
We own, operate and develop Britain's railway infrastructure; that's 20,000 miles of track, 30,000 bridges, tunnels and viaducts and the thousands of signals, level crossings and stations. We run 20 of the UK's largest stations while all the others, over 2,500, are run by the country's train operating companies.
Every day, there are more than 4.8 million journeys made in the UK and over 600 freight trains run on the network. People depend on Britain's railway for their daily commute, to visit friends and loved ones and to get them home safe every day. Our role is to deliver a safe and reliable railway, so we carefully manage and deliver thousands of projects every year that form part of the multi-billion pound Railway Upgrade Plan, to grow and expand the nation's railway network to respond to the tremendous growth and demand the railway has experienced - a doubling of passenger journeys over the past 20 years.
