UPDATE: FREIGHT WAGON DERAILMENT, ABERDEEN (CRAIGINCHES)

Region & Route:
Scotland’s Railway: Scotland

12.30pm Update, 10 May 2012

At approximately 16.50hrs last night (Wednesday 9th May) a Freightliner heavy haul train derailed approximately 2 miles south of Aberdeen while exiting Craiginches freight yard. Four carriages in total derailed with one toppling onto its side.

The line currently remains blocked for services between Aberdeen and the central belt operated by ScotRail and for services to Aberdeen and Inverness operated by East Coast.

Cranes will be on-site later today to re-rail/remove the de-railed wagons. Damage to the track will then be assessed and an appropriate plan put in place to repair damage with a view to restoring full service as early as possible. An estimate for restoration of services will be made once this assessment has been made.

The British Transport Police have investigated and found no suspicious circumstances.

The Rail Accident Investigation Branch (RAIB) will not be investigating as the derailment occurred within the freight depot siding, not on Network Rail infrastructure.

Network Rail apologises for any inconvenience caused by this incident and will aim to have services restored as quickly as possible.

About Network Rail

We own, operate and develop Britain's railway infrastructure; that's 20,000 miles of track, 30,000 bridges, tunnels and viaducts and the thousands of signals, level crossings and stations. We run 20 of the UK's largest stations while all the others, over 2,500, are run by the country's train operating companies.

Usually, there are almost five million journeys made in the UK and over 600 freight trains run on the network. People depend on Britain's railway for their daily commute, to visit friends and loved ones and to get them home safe every day. Our role is to deliver a safe and reliable railway, so we carefully manage and deliver thousands of projects every year that form part of the multi-billion pound Railway Upgrade Plan, to grow and expand the nation's railway network to respond to the tremendous growth and demand the railway has experienced - a doubling of passenger journeys over the past 20 years.
