Region & Route:
National
Network Rail has made two senior appointments to its internal communications team. Sean Trainor joins from the BBC as Head of Internal Communications.  Prior to joining the BBC, he headed up Internal Communications at BNFL. Joining him as Deputy Head of Internal Comms, Virginia Hicks joins Network Rail from her previous role as Head of Internal Communications Marks and Spencer Plc. The appointments come after a major reorganisation at Network Rail brought some 16,000 maintenance contractors in-house, boosting employee numbers to 30,000. Network Rail’s Group Director, Government & Corporate Affairs, Victoria Pender, said: “We are delighted to announce the appointment of Sean and Virginia. They join Network Rail at an exciting time, and illustrate how the company is attracting high calibre candidates from outside the industry.” Taking up his new post, Sean Trainor said: “In only one year Network Rail has almost doubled the number of employees over a period of immense organisational and industry change. The main challenge will be maintaining a highly motivated workforce to deliver a safe, reliable and efficient rail infrastructure.” Virginia Hicks added: “This is a challenging time for Network Rail with the Railways Bill currently going through parliament and my aim is to keep our employees informed and engaged.”

About Network Rail

We own, operate and develop Britain's railway infrastructure; that's 20,000 miles of track, 30,000 bridges, tunnels and viaducts and the thousands of signals, level crossings and stations. We run 20 of the UK's largest stations while all the others, over 2,500, are run by the country's train operating companies.

Usually, there are almost five million journeys made in the UK and over 600 freight trains run on the network. People depend on Britain's railway for their daily commute, to visit friends and loved ones and to get them home safe every day. Our role is to deliver a safe and reliable railway, so we carefully manage and deliver thousands of projects every year that form part of the multi-billion pound Railway Upgrade Plan, to grow and expand the nation's railway network to respond to the tremendous growth and demand the railway has experienced - a doubling of passenger journeys over the past 20 years.
