TUNNEL TRANSFORMATION MAKING GOOD PROGRESS

Region & Route:
| Southern
Network Rail is continuing to make good progress in its project to overhaul the Martello, Abbotscliffe and Shakespeare tunnels in Kent.  The tunnels, which are on the route from Dover Priory to Folkestone Central, are over 160 years old and their age was starting to affect the reliability of the route as they were having to close on a more regular basis for running repairs. Dave Ward, Network Rail Route Director, said:  “This work will make a real difference towards improving the reliability on one of Kent’s vital transport links.  We are currently working around the clock to repair, strengthen and waterproof the tunnels to ensure they’re fit for use for another 160 years.  We will also shortly be starting work to replace over 5km of track in the tunnels.  This work is an essential step to improving performance and providing a better service for passengers in Kent.”  The project began in April when the line between Dover and Folkestone closed to allow engineers access to the site 24 hours a day.  South Eastern Trains is operating a bus replacement service between the two stations.  Michael Holden, Chief Executive South Eastern Trains, added:  “We're pleased with the progress so far and look forward to the completion of this project so we can resume a full service for our passengers." The railway line is due to reopen on Monday 5 September.

About Network Rail

We own, operate and develop Britain's railway infrastructure; that's 20,000 miles of track, 30,000 bridges, tunnels and viaducts and the thousands of signals, level crossings and stations. We run 20 of the UK's largest stations while all the others, over 2,500, are run by the country's train operating companies.

Usually, there are almost five million journeys made in the UK and over 600 freight trains run on the network. People depend on Britain's railway for their daily commute, to visit friends and loved ones and to get them home safe every day. Our role is to deliver a safe and reliable railway, so we carefully manage and deliver thousands of projects every year that form part of the multi-billion pound Railway Upgrade Plan, to grow and expand the nation's railway network to respond to the tremendous growth and demand the railway has experienced - a doubling of passenger journeys over the past 20 years.
