Travel advice ahead of Wembley weekend of sport

Region & Route:
North West & Central

Rail passengers have been urged to plan their journeys ahead of a weekend of sporting events at Wembley Stadium.

On Saturday 30 May, the Rugby League Challenge Cup final will take place at England’s iconic national stadium, followed by the Women’s FA Cup final between Brighton and Manchester City on Sunday 31 May.

Over the same weekend, engineering teams will be completing key upgrades on sections of the West Coast Main Line near Milton Keynes, and there will be work relating to HS2 taking place close to London Euston station.

Trains will still run into Euston, but there will be a reduced service. Wembley Stadium station will also be closed on the 30 and 31 May.

Passengers should also be aware that the London Overground Lioness Line will not be operating over the same weekend, while essential maintenance work takes place.

To help support travel into London, Chiltern Railways will be adding more than 10,000 extra seats on each day across the weekend, operating additional services on the Chiltern Main Line between the West Midlands and London Marylebone.

Gary Walsh, West Coast South route director for Network Rail, said: “Over the last weekend of May we will be completing vital upgrades to drainage on the West Coast Main Line, which will help trains to continue running smoothly and with reduced disruption in future.

“We appreciate there is never a good time to disrupt the railway, and we would like to thank passengers for their patience while this work was taking place.”

Anyone planning to travel to either event at Wembley should check with their train operator ahead of time for the latest information, or visit the National Rail Enquiries website.

About Network Rail

We own, operate and develop Britain's railway infrastructure; that's 20,000 miles of track, 30,000 bridges, tunnels and viaducts and the thousands of signals, level crossings and stations. We run 20 of the UK's largest stations while all the others, over 2,500, are run by the country's train operating companies.

Usually, there are almost five million journeys made in the UK and over 600 freight trains run on the network. People depend on Britain's railway for their daily commute, to visit friends and loved ones and to get them home safe every day. Our role is to deliver a safe and reliable railway, so we carefully manage and deliver thousands of projects every year that form part of the multi-billion pound Railway Upgrade Plan, to grow and expand the nation's railway network to respond to the tremendous growth and demand the railway has experienced - a doubling of passenger journeys over the past 20 years.
