The new information categories added to the portal include:

• Delays explained – a series of web pages which explain common causes of delay on the network and what Network Rail is doing to reduce them

• Executive directors' gifts and hospitality

• Progress of projects – this shows the quarterly progress of our high profile infrastructure projects by time and cost

• Speak Out – a breakdown of the types of issues reported to Network Rail's confidential whistleblower service during its first year of operation

• Transparency strategy – the company is seeking views on the contents of its draft strategy

Mark Farrow, head of transparency for Network Rail, said: "We're continuing to publish more data as part of our commitment to being more open and transparent about what we do and the way we do it. This month, I'm particularly pleased that we are publishing a series of web pages explaining in simple and straightforward language the typical causes of delays to trains and how we are working to tackle them. We have also published our draft transparency strategy, and I'm keen to get as many views and thoughts from as many different people and organisations as possible. Only by listening and learning from others can we really progress in this area."

About Network Rail

We own, operate and develop Britain's railway infrastructure; that's 20,000 miles of track, 30,000 bridges, tunnels and viaducts and the thousands of signals, level crossings and stations. We run 20 of the UK's largest stations while all the others, over 2,500, are run by the country's train operating companies.

Usually, there are almost five million journeys made in the UK and over 600 freight trains run on the network. People depend on Britain's railway for their daily commute, to visit friends and loved ones and to get them home safe every day. Our role is to deliver a safe and reliable railway, so we carefully manage and deliver thousands of projects every year that form part of the multi-billion pound Railway Upgrade Plan, to grow and expand the nation's railway network to respond to the tremendous growth and demand the railway has experienced - a doubling of passenger journeys over the past 20 years.
