Trains through Redhill to be affected by major track improvement work this Christmas and New Year

Region & Route:
Southern
| Southern: Sussex

Passengers are being asked to plan ahead of major engineering work at Redhill this Christmas and New Year as Network Rail carries out a range of railway improvement, maintenance and renewal work

Rail passengers using trains that run through Redhill station are being asked to plan ahead and check before they travel over Christmas and the New Year when more than a mile of track is replaced in the area.

Trains will continue to run through on the fast lines but all services that pass through Redhill station itself will be replaced by buses from Sunday 20 December. The disruption will continue up to and including Sunday 3 January. Parking will also be severely restricted at Redhill station to make way for the work site.

In addition, Southern services between Redhill and Tonbridge will run between Edenbridge and Tonbridge only.

As a result, the following stations will have no trains, only buses:

  • Earlswood
  • Redhill
  • Merstham
  • Couldson South
  • Nutfield
  • Godstone

See editors’ notes for details.

The work, part of a £31.7 million investment by Network Rail in the Southern region’s railway network this Christmas, will involve installing new track switches and crossings to boost long-term reliability. By doing the work in one go over the holiday period, it will save many weekends of disruptive closures.

Lucy McAuliffe, Sussex Route Director for Network Rail, said: “We need to renew more than a mile of track infrastructure at Redhill, but we’re not able to do this without an extended closure, which is why we’ve planned this work over the Christmas period, when the number of people travelling is typically lower than at other times of the year.

“To make the most of this opportunity we’ll also deliver a range of other improvements and maintenance works.

“We recognise this period includes Christmas shopping and people travelling to visit family and friends, which is why we’re asking everyone, and not just regular commuters travelling through Redhill, to plan their journey and check before they travel.

“We understand that this work will cause disruption, and we want to thank passengers for their patience while we deliver improvements that will provide a more reliable railway for years to come.”

Jenny Saunders, Customer Services Director for Southern and Thameslink said: “I’d like to apologise for the changes to our services passing through Redhill station this festive season.

“While there will still be trains running through the area on the fast lines, those on routes that go via Redhill will either not run at all or be replaced by buses.

“Southern services from Tonbridge will operate no further than Edenbridge with buses covering the last stretch to and from Redhill.

“Please do go online to one of our websites to plan your journey and see how it might be affected. You may need to take a rail replacement bus which will regrettably take longer.”

Engineering work

Track renewal

At Redhill engineers will install new switches and crossings (the equipment that allows trains to move from one track to another) along more than a mile of railway.  We’ll also replace two sections of railway track with new rail, sleepers and ballast to improve reliability and reduce future maintenance

Routine railway maintenance

Between Merstham and Redhill, engineers will carry out inspections and essential maintenance to keep the railway operating safely and reliably. This includes replacing worn track timbers, testing rails for internal defects using specialist equipment, and carrying out minor repairs where required.

Signalling maintenance

Between Merstham and Redhill, maintenance of signalling equipment will take place including signals, track circuits, points (railway switches), equipment cabinets and level crossings.

Car park changes at Redhill

Car parking at Redhill station will be very limited during this period.

Car park 2 will be closed from 20 December to 4 January 2027 to allow Network Rail to set up a site compound for the works. Additionally, the car park at the front of the station will also be closed from 22:00 on Thursday 17 December through to 23:59 on Sunday 3 January to get ready for and then to facilitate the safe operation of rail replacement buses.

Subway closure

From 00:01 Sunday 20 December to 00:59 Tuesday 29 December 2026 the subway between Marketfield Way and Redstone Hill under the railway will be closed. This is to facilitate work on the track safely.

About Network Rail

We own, operate and develop Britain's railway infrastructure; that's 20,000 miles of track, 30,000 bridges, tunnels and viaducts and the thousands of signals, level crossings and stations. We run 20 of the UK's largest stations while all the others, over 2,500, are run by the country's train operating companies.

Usually, there are almost five million journeys made in the UK and over 600 freight trains run on the network. People depend on Britain's railway for their daily commute, to visit friends and loved ones and to get them home safe every day. Our role is to deliver a safe and reliable railway, so we carefully manage and deliver thousands of projects every year that form part of the multi-billion pound Railway Upgrade Plan, to grow and expand the nation's railway network to respond to the tremendous growth and demand the railway has experienced - a doubling of passenger journeys over the past 20 years.
