Crucial four-day engineering programme for West Highland Line
- Region & Route:
- Scotland’s Railway: Scotland
Engineers will be working around-the-clock for four days from this Saturday at locations between Craigendoran and Crianlarich to renew track, refurbish structures and improve drainage on the railway.
On Saturday (November 9) and Sunday (November 10) track will be renewed at Craigendoran, near Helensburgh, where engineers will also replace switches and crossings – movable sections of rail that allow trains to swap between tracks.
At Helensburgh Upper and Glen Falloch further track renewal work will take place between Saturday and Tuesday (November 12) with over a mile of railway being replaced across these locations.
A bridge over the railway at Garelochhead will also be refurbished, with engineers blasting off old paint, carrying out steelwork repairs and repainting the structure.
Specialist geotechnical engineers will also undertake earthworks inspections between Helensburgh and Crianlarich over the four-day closure of the line.
To keep passengers on the move, replacement buses will run between Crianlarich and Glasgow Queen Street on Saturday, Sunday, Monday and Tuesday and also between Helensburgh Central and Dumbarton Central on Saturday and Sunday. Train services return to normal on Wednesday.
Ross Moran, Network Rail Scotland route director, said: “This vital work will help improve performance and reliability for our customers. Our engineers will work around-the-clock to complete these projects quickly, with as little disruption as possible, and we thank our passengers and freight customers for their understanding while this crucial investment takes place."

About Network Rail
We own, operate and develop Britain's railway infrastructure; that's 20,000 miles of track, 30,000 bridges, tunnels and viaducts and the thousands of signals, level crossings and stations. We run 20 of the UK's largest stations while all the others, over 2,500, are run by the country's train operating companies.
Usually, there are almost five million journeys made in the UK and over 600 freight trains run on the network. People depend on Britain's railway for their daily commute, to visit friends and loved ones and to get them home safe every day. Our role is to deliver a safe and reliable railway, so we carefully manage and deliver thousands of projects every year that form part of the multi-billion pound Railway Upgrade Plan, to grow and expand the nation's railway network to respond to the tremendous growth and demand the railway has experienced - a doubling of passenger journeys over the past 20 years.
