Three key pieces of travel advice are being released for music fans planning journeys by rail when the Eurovision song contest comes to Liverpool next month.

Between 7-13 May the city is hosting the massive music competition on behalf of last year’s winner Ukraine.

Thousands of people from across the world are expected to travel into Liverpool Lime Street station before heading to events across the city.

With trains expected to be very busy, Network Rail is today (Monday 17 April) revealing its three tips to make sure passengers get Douze points by hitting all the right notes when using the railway:

  • Plan your journey in advance by checking www.nationalrail.co.uk
  • Allow extra time to travel - a queueing system will be in place during busy times
  • Travel light – keep luggage and bags to a minimum as trains will be very busy

Liverpool Lime Street is used to dealing with thousands of passengers and has plans in place to make people’s journeys as smooth as possible through the station.

Extra staff will help visitors find their way to venues and give advice on the concourse, and queueing systems will be in place during the busiest periods to make sure people get safely to and from station platforms.

Kyla Thomas, Liverpool Lime Street station manager, said: “Eurovision coming to Liverpool is huge and we can’t wait to welcome people from all over the world to our fantastic city – with Lime Street station their gateway to the contest.

“What we ask of people planning to travel by rail is to think in threes – plan ahead, allow extra time, and travel light. We hope these top tips get everyone off to a winning start during what will be an amazing week.”

It all kicks off on Sunday 7 May with the launch event at St George’s Hall.

Attention then turns to the Liverpool Arena for the semi-finals on Tuesday 9 and Thursday 11 May, culminating in the grand final on Saturday 13 May.

A huge programme of cultural events will be taking place across the city throughout Eurovision week, so even those without tickets to the arena itself are urged to plan their journeys in advance.

Lime Street station will also be getting in this spirit of the major occasion hosting acts and events in the run up to the competition.

For more on the public transport options to get around the city you can visit the dedicated Eurovision page on the Merseytravel website.

Notes to Editors

During the Opening Ceremony (Sunday 7 May) and Grand Final (Saturday 13 May) a queuing system will be in place so people can safely get on their trains.

In order to manage passengers safely, this queue will extend outside the station and along Bolton Street.

People are urged to account for this and add extra time to make their journeys.

Please do not rely on the last train home as once the last services leave there will be no alternative travel arrangements out of Liverpool Lime Street Station.

Passengers can check their journeys at www.nationalrail.co.uk for the latest travel information.

About Network Rail

We own, operate and develop Britain's railway infrastructure; that's 20,000 miles of track, 30,000 bridges, tunnels and viaducts and the thousands of signals, level crossings and stations. We run 20 of the UK's largest stations while all the others, over 2,500, are run by the country's train operating companies.

Usually, there are almost five million journeys made in the UK and over 600 freight trains run on the network. People depend on Britain's railway for their daily commute, to visit friends and loved ones and to get them home safe every day. Our role is to deliver a safe and reliable railway, so we carefully manage and deliver thousands of projects every year that form part of the multi-billion pound Railway Upgrade Plan, to grow and expand the nation's railway network to respond to the tremendous growth and demand the railway has experienced - a doubling of passenger journeys over the past 20 years.
