Temporary road closure in Gwynedd as essential bridge upgrade gets underway

Reminder for road users: work to upgrade the railway near Aberdyfi will mean a temporary road closure.

Network Rail is renewing Pant Eidal underbridge, which will allow trains to continue to run safely and efficiently.

One lane of the A493 in Aberdyfi will be closed, between Trefri Lodge and the access road to Gogarth Hall, so that Network Rail can carry out the work safely. Traffic lights will be in place from Monday 4 October to Friday 22 October.

The road either side of the bridge will be completely closed from 08:00 on Sunday 10 October until 20:00 on Wednesday 13 October. During this time, Network Rail and contractors, Centregreat, will be using a crane to remove the old bridge.

Network Rail has written to people living near the work site and has worked closely with Gwynedd Council to make sure a fully signposted diversionary route is in place for road traffic.

Laura Townsend, scheme project manager for Network Rail, said: “Renewing Pant Eidal underbridge will mean we can continue to run a safe, efficient and reliable railway.

“I’m sorry the work may be disruptive to the local community. We have worked hard to minimise the disruption as much as possible.

“We have planned for this work to be carried out at the same time as our Barmouth Viaduct upgrade to prevent us closing the railway line on a separate occasion. It also means we can avoid the busy summer season for the popular tourist spot of Aberdyfi.”
