Successful completion of Queen Street platform extensions

The newly extended platform two and three at Glasgow Queen Street station re-opened this morning (July 29), following the successful completion of a four-week long programme of work.
As part of the £120m project to redevelop and expand Scotland’s third-busiest station, platforms 2 and 3 closed on June 30 to allow engineers to safely undertake the 26 metre extension to both platforms.
Over four weeks, a team of 90 engineers worked circa 21,000 hours to remove 2000 tonnes of material and install 100metres of new platform walls, 160metres of new track and connect it to the existing infrastructure, as well as extending the overhead power lines by 50metres.
Kevin McClelland, route delivery director for infrastructure projects, said: “Our team of engineers worked around-the-clock in a confined worksite, which was not without its challenges given we were operating within a live station environment.
“When works complete overall in spring 2020, the new station will not only be transformative in terms of the passenger experience, with longer electric trains, but also in terms of the station surrounds – providing a vibrant and contemporary building in the heart of the city centre.
“I want to thank passengers and the wider public for their cooperation during the delivery of the platform extension work. We appreciate the understanding and patience shown as we completed another vital element of the Queen Street station redevelopment work”.
The completion of the platform 2 and 3 extensions also means the floor space to the George Square/West George Street side of the station has increased in size, as part of the new concourse now joins with the existing one.
A further phase of platform work will take place between mid-September and mid-October to extend platforms 4 and 5.

The £120m redevelopment of Glasgow Queen Street station is part of the Edinburgh Glasgow Improvement Programme (EGIP) – a Scottish Government investment in the railway infrastructure across central Scotland.
Glasgow Queen Street station opened in 1842, with the Victorian glass roof constructed three decades later and completed in 1878, which is now a category A listed structure.
