Strong progress on £4.5m upgrade at Stevenage station

A £4.5 million upgrade of canopies and staircase roofs is currently underway at Stevenage station, along with the full renewal of all platform lighting.
The four-month refurbishment is making strong progress and is planned for completion by the end of June.
The old station canopy roofs have already been removed and brand-new, weather-tight surfaces have been fitted. The wooden structures underneath have also been renewed, and the first parts of the new lighting system have been installed. Work is continuing to upgrade the roofs over the station’s staircases.
During the weekend of 31 January-1 February, when trains were not running through the area due to engineering work, the team set up on site ahead of the main work starting.
This included constructing Faraday cages, which provide a protective enclosure that shields teams from electrical hazards, allowing safe daytime working near live overhead lines. This means that trains can continue to run while we work on the station canopies, minimising disruption for passengers.
The station will remain open to passengers throughout the improvement work. Station visitors are advised that scaffolding from the upgrade work will not be fully removed until November. This will be completed during a planned period of other engineering work taking place on the East Coast Main Line, again helping to minimise disruption for passenger and freight services.
Danni Parker-Rankine, Network Rail scheme project manager, said:
“This refurbishment at Stevenage station will transform the canopies, upgrade the roof structure and resolve long-standing issues with leaks. Along with the fully renewed platform lighting system, the improvements will make the station more welcoming. It will keep passengers safe, secure, and dry in future.
“The project team has worked incredibly hard to keep the programme moving, and we’re pleased to see such significant progress made already.”

“I appreciate this work may cause some short‑term disruption but ensuring the safety of our customers and colleagues is our absolute priority. These improvements are essential to maintaining the high standards our passengers rightly expect.”
