A third public information event is being held ahead of the major work to rebuild the Greek Street bridge, which crosses Europe’s busiest mix-used railway.
Scheduled for Wednesday 19 March 2025, the event will take place between 4-7pm at Our Lady’s Catholic Primary School, in Edgeley, Stockport*.
Almost £20m is being invested to replace the bridge that takes the Greek Street roundabout over the West Coast Main Line.
The original bridge, which was constructed in 1958, has reached the end of its life and needs to be replaced for the safety of road users and pedestrians on the bridge’s surface and the rail passengers below.
To carry out the work safely, the Greek Street bridge and sections of nearby roads will be closed from 31 March 2025 for one year.
At the event, residents can meet the project team, learn about proposed diversionary routes, and ask any questions they have about the work.
Two events were previously held at Stockport’s Age UK hub, which is right next to the bridge. The venue has changed to accommodate the popularity of the information events, which have been well attended by the community.
Olivia Boland, Network Rail sponsor, said: “We’re excited to host the third community event and give residents a closer look at how we’re progressing on the Greek Street bridge project.
“I’m very grateful to the team at Age UK who have graciously hosted our very well-attended events over the past few months.
“Please join us at Our Lady’s Catholic primary school to ask the project team any questions you might have about the work.”
Cllr Grace Baynham, cabinet member for Parks, Highways and Transport Services, said: “We’re quickly approaching the start of this major project, which will see a new bridge replaced over Europe’s busiest mixed use railway line.
“We know it will cause disruption to residents who live both close by and further afield and we have been communicating closely with Network Rail and TfGM to ensure residents know the impacts that this project will bring.
“The next engagement event will be another perfect opportunity for residents to find out more about the routed diversions and the alterations to local bus services in the area.”
Transport bosses at Transport for Greater Manchester (TfGM) have confirmed planned bus diversion routes to give passengers as much time as possible to plan their journeys during the disruption.
Danny Vaughan, chief network officer at TfGM, said: “The bridge at Greek Street is almost 70 years old and has now reached the end of its life, meaning it needs to be replaced to ensure the safety of road and rail users for generations to come.
“We know this will cause disruption and are working closely with partners to minimise the impact while these essential works take place.
“We have now confirmed the diversion routes for buses that usually use Greek Street to help people plan their journeys. These diversions may change due to the nature and length of the works so I would urge everyone to keep themselves up to date by checking the Bee Network website or app before they travel.”
This week, Network Rail released a CGI video explaining how engineers will carry out the work.
Over Christmas, the team began preparations for the bridge’s closure and eventual demolition. A scaffold bridge was installed to divert important utility services from underneath the road surface, so they can continue to serve the community throughout the project.
Following the road closure in March, work will be carried out to the railway over the Easter bank holiday ahead of the main work over the summer.
In August, the bridge will be dismantled and replaced over 21 days. During this time, there will be no train services running through Stockport.

About Network Rail
We own, operate and develop Britain's railway infrastructure; that's 20,000 miles of track, 30,000 bridges, tunnels and viaducts and the thousands of signals, level crossings and stations. We run 20 of the UK's largest stations while all the others, over 2,500, are run by the country's train operating companies.
Usually, there are almost five million journeys made in the UK and over 600 freight trains run on the network. People depend on Britain's railway for their daily commute, to visit friends and loved ones and to get them home safe every day. Our role is to deliver a safe and reliable railway, so we carefully manage and deliver thousands of projects every year that form part of the multi-billion pound Railway Upgrade Plan, to grow and expand the nation's railway network to respond to the tremendous growth and demand the railway has experienced - a doubling of passenger journeys over the past 20 years.
