Stay informed on railway improvements with Network Rail Scotland
- Region & Route:
- Scotland’s Railway: Scotland
Network Rail is encouraging people living and working near the railway in Scotland to sign up to its digital notifications service, helping them stay informed about work taking place in their area.
The service allows lineside neighbours to receive updates directly by email about planned maintenance and improvement projects, including information about any activities that may be visible or noticeable locally.
Almost 4,000 people across Scotland have already signed up to receive digital notifications. While that number continues to grow, it's estimated that more than 2 million people live or work next to the railway and could benefit from receiving updates about work taking place in their area.
Work takes place across Scotland’s Railway throughout the year to ensure passengers and freight continue to travel safely and reliably. Later this year, major projects will include the Fife Electrification Project alongside upgrades in the north on the West Highland Line and Kyle Line.
The digital notification service helps Network Rail share information with communities on these projects quickly and efficiently.
Traditionally, neighbours affected by planned railway works have been informed through printed letters delivered to nearby homes and businesses.
By signing up to receive updates digitally, people can receive information more quickly and conveniently by email, including updates about locations that matter to them, such as a relative's property, their workplace or a regular commuting route.
The service also provides timely safety information and gives people an opportunity to provide feedback on work taking place in their area.
Anyone who lives or works near the railway can sign up at www.networkrail.co.uk/sign-up.
Catherine Ospedale, director of communications for Network Rail Scotland, said: “Keeping our neighbours informed about railway work is incredibly important to us. Across Scotland we're delivering a wide range of projects that help maintain and improve the railway for the millions of passengers and freight users who rely on it every year.
“Our digital notification service makes it easier for people living and working near the railway to stay up to date with projects in their area, providing quicker updates and the latest information directly to their inbox.”

About Network Rail
We own, operate and develop Britain's railway infrastructure; that's 20,000 miles of track, 30,000 bridges, tunnels and viaducts and the thousands of signals, level crossings and stations. We run 20 of the UK's largest stations while all the others, over 2,500, are run by the country's train operating companies.
Usually, there are almost five million journeys made in the UK and over 600 freight trains run on the network. People depend on Britain's railway for their daily commute, to visit friends and loved ones and to get them home safe every day. Our role is to deliver a safe and reliable railway, so we carefully manage and deliver thousands of projects every year that form part of the multi-billion pound Railway Upgrade Plan, to grow and expand the nation's railway network to respond to the tremendous growth and demand the railway has experienced - a doubling of passenger journeys over the past 20 years.
