Stations days shines a light on London Liverpool Street

Region & Route:
Eastern: Anglia

A day to celebrate the country’s 2,563 railway stations in being used to showcase the improvements at the third busiest station, London Liverpool Street.

It is estimated almost 67 million passengers entered or exited through the station in 2017/18, and over the past 18 months has seen its 3,500 lights replaced, making the station much more efficient by saving around 800,000 kwh of energy each year.

Our two water fountains have so far saved the use of 160,000 single-use plastic bottles which could have ended up in landfill.

Customers also don’t need to spend a penny when they use the toilet as it has been free to pee at the station since April.

For disabled passengers, there is much greater awareness of both visible and hidden disabilities and improved signage that direct to lifts.

Other changes to improve the station which are part of a Station Improvement Plan include 150 more seats for passengers, free wi-fi coming in the near future and improved information so that passengers can better plan their journeys and get the latest train running information.

Passengers can also give instant feedback of what they think of the station using one of the touch screens located by the toilets and information stand.

Stuart Johnson, station manager at London Liverpool Street, said: “We want people to have an enjoyable experience when they come through the station, either as a passenger, using it as a walk through or to use one of the many shops or cafes.

“All our staff work tirelessly to make the experience better for everyone who uses the station, and on Stations Day, we celebrate those staff that go the extra mile to help others.”

Notes to Editors

The figure is based on the station usage statistics, published by the Office for Rail and Road. In 2017/18, it is estimated that 66, 966,512 passengers either entered or exited the station in 2017/18

About Network Rail

We own, operate and develop Britain's railway infrastructure; that's 20,000 miles of track, 30,000 bridges, tunnels and viaducts and the thousands of signals, level crossings and stations. We run 20 of the UK's largest stations while all the others, over 2,500, are run by the country's train operating companies.

Usually, there are almost five million journeys made in the UK and over 600 freight trains run on the network. People depend on Britain's railway for their daily commute, to visit friends and loved ones and to get them home safe every day. Our role is to deliver a safe and reliable railway, so we carefully manage and deliver thousands of projects every year that form part of the multi-billion pound Railway Upgrade Plan, to grow and expand the nation's railway network to respond to the tremendous growth and demand the railway has experienced - a doubling of passenger journeys over the past 20 years.
