SHELL’S BRINDED TO BE LATEST NETWORK RAIL NON-EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR

Network Rail has made a further heavyweight addition to its board today with the appointment of Malcolm Brinded as a non-executive director. Mr Brinded is currently on Royal Dutch Shell plc’s board as executive director, upstream international.

Announcing the appointment, Network Rail’s chairman, Rick Haythornthwaite, said: "My priority when joining Network Rail was to reshape the non-executive element of the board. Building on the success of the current and former non-executives; this reflects the change agenda on which the company is now embarked.

"Malcolm Brinded will play a vital role in Network Rail’s corporate governance. His many years of experience at a senior level at one of the world’s biggest companies will be a great asset to Network Rail’s board. I warmly welcome him."

Mr Brinded will join the board today and will have to be confirmed in post by Network Rail’s members by election at the 2011 annual general meeting.

Other recent non-executive appointments recently announced by Mr Haythornthwaite include: Lawrie Haynes, president - nuclear, Rolls-Royce; Janis Kong, non-executive director at Kingfisher plc, Visit Britain, Portmeirion plc, Forum for the Future and former main board director of BAA plc (2002- 2006); Graham Eccles, former deputy chairman of London Midland; and David Higgins, chief executive of the Olympic Delivery Authority and now Network Rail's chief executive - designate.

Mr Haythornthwaite concluded: “The appointment of Mr Brinded is one of the final elements of my task to reshape the board.  It is now well equipped to support the company as it embarks on a new phase of its evolution - a phase that will see a change of approach and direction as it works to deliver a better, less costly railway."

  • Malcolm Brinded became executive director of Shell’s upstream international business with effect from 1 July 2009

  • He joined Shell after graduating in engineering from University of Cambridge and has worked for Shell companies in Brunei, the Netherlands, Oman and the UK. In 1998 he became managing director of Shell UK exploration and production - responsible for a fifth of the country’s offshore oil and gas business - and from 1999 until 2002 he was Shell country chairman in the UK. He continues as a member of the Royal Dutch Shell plc board, a role he has held since its formation in 2004, and was a member of the boards of the two former parent companies since 2002. From March 2004 until his current appointment, he was executive director in charge of exploration & production

  • Malcolm is a fellow of the institutions of civil and mechanical engineers and of the royal academy of engineering. He is a member of the Nigerian president’s honorary international investor council and a trustee of the Emirates Foundation and the international business leaders forum. He is also the chairman of the Shell foundation. In 2002 he was appointed CBE for services to the UK oil and gas industry

  • Malcolm, a British national, was born in 1953.  He is married with three sons
