Severely reduced service across East Midlands during rail strikes
- Region & Route:
- Eastern
- Passengers should only travel if necessary on 1 and 8 October during national strike action
- Further action on 5, 6, 7 and 8 October will also affect EMR services
- Passengers should plan ahead, know their last train times and expect disruption
Rail passengers should check their journey if they are planning to travel between 1 and 9 October as industrial action by various transport unions will affect services.
On Saturday 1 and Saturday 8 October passengers across the region should only travel if absolutely necessary. National strike action will result in a severely limited special timetable running between 7:30am and 6:30pm and many stations and routes will have no service at all.
On Sunday 2 and Sunday 9 October, the strike has a knock-on impact which means that the first trains will not begin their journeys until later than usual. For the London Marathon, taking place on Sunday 2 October this unfortunately means that it will not be possible to arrive in central London by rail much earlier than 09:00 (depending on route) and the first trains are expected to be extremely busy.
On Wednesday 5 October, there will be no CrossCountry services or EMR services due to industrial action. Thameslink services will run as normal, however, advice to customers is to expect these services to be extremely busy and to check before travelling for the latest advice.
On Thursday 6, Friday 7 and Saturday 8 October, EMR is affected by more industrial action and there will be a significant reduction in train services.
Gary Walsh, East Midlands Route Director for Network Rail, said: “I can only apologise for the limited service we’re able to offer passengers as once again, we’re impacted by another round of industrial action.
“Unfortunately, we’re asking passengers to only travel by train if it’s absolutely necessary. Those who do need to travel should plan ahead, check their journey and expect significant disruption.”

About Network Rail
We own, operate and develop Britain's railway infrastructure; that's 20,000 miles of track, 30,000 bridges, tunnels and viaducts and the thousands of signals, level crossings and stations. We run 20 of the UK's largest stations while all the others, over 2,500, are run by the country's train operating companies.
Usually, there are almost five million journeys made in the UK and over 600 freight trains run on the network. People depend on Britain's railway for their daily commute, to visit friends and loved ones and to get them home safe every day. Our role is to deliver a safe and reliable railway, so we carefully manage and deliver thousands of projects every year that form part of the multi-billion pound Railway Upgrade Plan, to grow and expand the nation's railway network to respond to the tremendous growth and demand the railway has experienced - a doubling of passenger journeys over the past 20 years.
