Scotland’s Railway raises level crossing awareness in the Highlands

Region & Route:
Scotland’s Railway: Scotland

People across the Highlands are being informed about the dangers of the railway as part of International Level Crossing Awareness Day (ILCAD).

A team of level crossing managers from Scotland’s Railway have been visiting businesses, delivery depots and schools to promote the safe use of level crossings.

On ILCAD (Thursday 15 June), Colin Pannell, David McLean, Martyn Shaw, Nathaniel Ashcroft and David Sutherland delivered presentations and handed out leaflets at Corpach Marina, Royal Mail Inverness and Lairg, Helmdale and Brora Primary Schools, Morrisons, Tesco and Asda Inverness.

These businesses were visited because they have new or existing services that mean they use level crossings regularly and may have added time or other pressures that can distract them from using crossings safely.

Innis Keith, Health, Safety and Environment Director for Scotland’s Railway, said: “It’s great to see how our level crossing managers have engaged with the public and businesses this year for ILCAD. Raising awareness of level crossing safety is vital to the overall safety on the railway.

“We cannot thank those that were willing to speak to us about crossing safety enough for their time and we look forward to working with them more closely in the future.”

About Network Rail

We own, operate and develop Britain's railway infrastructure; that's 20,000 miles of track, 30,000 bridges, tunnels and viaducts and the thousands of signals, level crossings and stations. We run 20 of the UK's largest stations while all the others, over 2,500, are run by the country's train operating companies.

Usually, there are almost five million journeys made in the UK and over 600 freight trains run on the network. People depend on Britain's railway for their daily commute, to visit friends and loved ones and to get them home safe every day. Our role is to deliver a safe and reliable railway, so we carefully manage and deliver thousands of projects every year that form part of the multi-billion pound Railway Upgrade Plan, to grow and expand the nation's railway network to respond to the tremendous growth and demand the railway has experienced - a doubling of passenger journeys over the past 20 years.
