Passengers reminded to check before travelling this Easter

Region & Route:
Scotland’s Railway: Scotland

Network Rail is reminding passengers to check before they travel this Easter as we prepare to deliver improvements across Scotland’s Railway.

From April 16 to April 18, engineers will be working around-the-clock to make the railway infrastructure more resilient and reliable.

On the west coast main line, which links Glasgow Central to London Euston, engineers will renew tracks at a range of locations including Ecclefechan, Carstairs, Beattock and Abington.

Most of the country’s services are unaffected by the Easter works, but due to their complex nature, these projects cannot be delivered without some short-term closures of the line.

Passengers are urged to plan their journey in advance and are reminded that changes to services can be found on www.nationalrail.co.uk, or individual operators’ websites.

Passengers are also being reminded about the ongoing improvement works on the Argyle line, which are impacting services between Exhibition Centre and Rutherglen.

Liam Sumpter, Network Rail route director for Scotland, said: “This improvement programme is vital for the future of Scotland’s Railway.

“The work we are undertaking this Easter weekend will help to provide a more modern railway and will help to improve reliability on the west coast main line – one of Europe’s busiest rail routes.

“We understand the inconvenience this work will cause some customers, but such a significant programme cannot be delivered without temporary disruption and every effort has been made to reduce the impact of our activities as much as possible.”

About Network Rail

We own, operate and develop Britain's railway infrastructure; that's 20,000 miles of track, 30,000 bridges, tunnels and viaducts and the thousands of signals, level crossings and stations. We run 20 of the UK's largest stations while all the others, over 2,500, are run by the country's train operating companies.

Usually, there are almost five million journeys made in the UK and over 600 freight trains run on the network. People depend on Britain's railway for their daily commute, to visit friends and loved ones and to get them home safe every day. Our role is to deliver a safe and reliable railway, so we carefully manage and deliver thousands of projects every year that form part of the multi-billion pound Railway Upgrade Plan, to grow and expand the nation's railway network to respond to the tremendous growth and demand the railway has experienced - a doubling of passenger journeys over the past 20 years.
