Road closure to begin as Balnacra Level Crossing undergoes safety inspection

Region & Route:
Scotland’s Railway: Scotland

Network Rail is reminding users of the A890 that it will be closed overnight this Sunday (24 September).

Engineers will carry out a safety inspection and essential maintenance at Balnacra level crossing on the Kyle of Lochalsh line during the closure.

To complete the required work in the safest and most efficient way, the road will be closed at the crossing from 22:00hrs on Sunday evening until 06:00hrs on Monday morning.

The units making up the road surface of the crossing will be removed so engineers can inspect the rails for signs of corrosion and silt build-up, while assessing the need for any future maintenance.

During the full road closure there will be no vehicular access over the crossing, except for emergency vehicles.

Lee Ross, Infrastructure Maintenance Delivery Manager for Network Rail said: “We’re carrying out this inspection as part of our monitoring programme designed to keep the level crossing operating safely and effectively.

“Closing the road overnight means that our team can work in the safest possible environment while completing the job with the minimum of disruption.

“We thank the community for its patience while we carry out this essential work.”

Every level crossing has a programme of inspection to ensure that they are safe and operating effectively.

Conscious of the inconvenience the road closure will cause, Network Rail is working closely with Highland Council to highlight the situation to road users and will work to keep the duration of the closure to an absolute minimum.

Network Rail is also advising that properties closest to the crossing may also be inconvenienced by the overnight work and would like to thank them in advance for their patience.

If anyone has any questions in relation to the work, they can call Network Rail’s 24-hr helpline on 03457 11 41 41 or email via our website www.networkrail.co.uk/contactus

About Network Rail

We own, operate and develop Britain's railway infrastructure; that's 20,000 miles of track, 30,000 bridges, tunnels and viaducts and the thousands of signals, level crossings and stations. We run 20 of the UK's largest stations while all the others, over 2,500, are run by the country's train operating companies.

Usually, there are almost five million journeys made in the UK and over 600 freight trains run on the network. People depend on Britain's railway for their daily commute, to visit friends and loved ones and to get them home safe every day. Our role is to deliver a safe and reliable railway, so we carefully manage and deliver thousands of projects every year that form part of the multi-billion pound Railway Upgrade Plan, to grow and expand the nation's railway network to respond to the tremendous growth and demand the railway has experienced - a doubling of passenger journeys over the past 20 years.
