Residents reminded about upcoming bridge renewal project in Newport

Network Rail will begin refurbishing Caerleon Road railway bridge in Newport this Friday (20 July) as part of its Railway Upgrade Plan.

The essential work to the 113-year-old railway underbridge, which crosses Caerleon Road, will include repairs to the steelwork to strengthen the bridge and stonework repairs to the bridge abutments, plus deep cleaning and painting.

The refurbishment will take place in two phases, with work to the first half of the bridge commencing on Friday until 30 November 2018.

Caerleon Road will be temporarily closed overnight from 11.30pm to 7am on Friday 20 July and Saturday 21 July and overnight from 9pm on Sunday 22 July to 5.30am on Monday 23 July for Network Rail to carry out preparatory work, including completing structural surveys and site set up. A temporary diversion route will be clearly signposted. Single lane traffic management will then be in place throughout the duration of the work. Access for pedestrians and cyclists will remain open.

Lee Ackerman, project manager for Network Rail in Wales and Borders, said: “This essential work will help restore the bridge for years to come. We have been working closely with Newport City Council to minimise disruption to the local community and road users, and we will be completing the work in two phases to avoid closing the road for an extended period.

“We would like to thank everyone in advance for their patience while we complete this essential work.”

The second and final phase of the refurbishment works will commence in January 2019 and is due to be completed by March 2019.
