Residents invited to find out more about Gallowhill bridge rebuild

Region & Route:
Scotland’s Railway: Scotland

Engineers will soon begin work to install a new footbridge over the railway between Gallowhill Road and Arkleston Drive in Paisley.

Part of our upgrade plan for Scotland’s railway, the new footbridge will replace the aging structure which currently links residents on either side of the main Glasgow-Ayrshire/Inverclyde railway line.

Before work starts on the project, Network Rail will be hosting a community drop in event on Tuesday, November 29, from 4pm to 7pm, in the Gallowhill Community Centre.

Representatives from Network Rail and our contractors will be available to answer any questions or concerns residents may have about this bridge replacement project.

Work on the four-month programme to replace the existing footbridge with a new steel structure will get underway on Saturday, December 3.

During December engineers will begin to prepare the site and remove vegetation near the structure before work to remove the old bridges commences in January. Engineers will the build the new bridge in the same location before reopening the waling route at the end of March.

A Network Rail spokesman said: “We appreciate that closuring and replacing the footbridge will cause some disruption locally, but experience has shown that this is the safest and most efficient way to deliver the work in a way that minimises the overall disruption for the community.

“We apologise in advance for any inconvenience and thanks the community for their patience and understanding as we deliver this important investment in Scotland’s railway.”

Any questions or concerns can be raised with network rail’s 24-hour public helpline on  03457 11 41 41.

About Network Rail

We own, operate and develop Britain's railway infrastructure; that's 20,000 miles of track, 30,000 bridges, tunnels and viaducts and the thousands of signals, level crossings and stations. We run 20 of the UK's largest stations while all the others, over 2,500, are run by the country's train operating companies.

Usually, there are almost five million journeys made in the UK and over 600 freight trains run on the network. People depend on Britain's railway for their daily commute, to visit friends and loved ones and to get them home safe every day. Our role is to deliver a safe and reliable railway, so we carefully manage and deliver thousands of projects every year that form part of the multi-billion pound Railway Upgrade Plan, to grow and expand the nation's railway network to respond to the tremendous growth and demand the railway has experienced - a doubling of passenger journeys over the past 20 years.
