Residents invited to find out about Barry Island viaduct improvement work

Network Rail will be refurbishing Barry Island viaduct to ensure it remains safe and reliable for many years to come.

The local community is invited to find out more about the upgrade work, which will include cleaning and repainting the viaduct and repairing damaged steel work on the structure.

Andy Thomas, managing director for Network Rail Wales, said: “We want to get everyone home safe every day and renewing Barry Island viaduct will ensure it remains reliable for passengers.

“I’d like to invite the local community to come along to our drop-in event to find out more about this work, which will help us to accommodate growing passenger numbers as part of our Railway Upgrade Plan.”

Network Rail staff will be available to answer any questions residents may have during a drop-in event at Barry Island station on Tuesday 4 July from 3pm until 6.30pm.

Most work will take place during the day and in the early evening. Some activities can only be delivered when trains are not running, so from mid-August until mid-November, work to upgrade the structure will take place every Saturday evening from midnight until 7am.

Passenger rail services will not be affected by this work.

Network Rail is doing everything possible to minimise the impact on the local community by carrying out the work as quickly and safely as possible. A scaffold will be erected around the viaduct which will be fully covered during the work to reduce dust and acoustic barriers will be used to reduce noise.
