Reliability boost for Norwich to London rail passengers

Network Rail has completed works to upgrade drainage and worn-out track between Maryland and Forest Gate to increase reliability for Greater Anglia and TfL Rail passengers on the line between Norwich and London.

The work started in February and involved installing more effective drainage to prevent flooding that occurs in this area, which has historically caused delays. A total of 360 metres of pipes have been installed to carry rainwater away from the tracks quickly and effectively so that trains can keep running whatever the weather.

Track, including the rails and the sleepers, was also replaced on this busy part of the network to prevent delays caused by track faults. Track works like these are essential to prevent issues that cause delays. Just like road surfaces, track wears out from constant use, even more so on busy main lines. The track is regularly inspected and maintained to keep it in good working order, but eventually a full replacement is required.

Ellie Burrows, Network Rail’s route director for Anglia, said: “We’ve completed works in this area which aim to prevent flooding which has been the cause of many delays in this area in the past. The upgraded track will also help to drive down delays on this busy section, making journeys more reliable between London and Norwich.”
