Railway neighbours invited to Catford community meeting as Network Rail prepares to replace Victorian bridge

A Victorian railway bridge in Catford, south east London, is set to be replaced in May as Network Rail continues its Railway Upgrade Plan in the South East.
Neighbours from the area are invited to come and learn more about the project at a public meeting on Wednesday March 14, at the Civic Centre in Catford Road. Representatives from the company will be available from 3pm-7pm.
The Victorian bridge, which also carries part of Catford station's platforms, will be lifted out with a crane and replaced with a new structure, meaning Westdown Road will be closed over the weekend of May 26 – 28 the second May Bank Holiday.
Network Rail community relations manager, Andrew MacKinnon, said: “Investing in a new bridge means we can provide a reliable service for passengers in the future.
“Whenever we do a major project like this there may be some disruption to our neighbours. We want to work with them to understand what impact we will have, and explain what we are doing, why we are doing it and of course, when.
“The railway in the south east has the oldest metal bridges in the country and it is vital we upgrade them to keep up with the increasing numbers of trains and passengers.”
The railway through Catford will also be closed while the bridge is taken out.
