Railway bridge upgrade to begin in Thorntonhall

Network Rail will upgrade the railway bridge on Peel Road in Thorntonhall from Saturday 5 October.
Engineers will raise the parapets (side walls) during the next five weeks, with the work, part of the East Kilbride Enhancement project, due to be completed by Friday 8 November.
For the duration of the works and to allow the work to take place in the safest way, the road at the bridge will close to all vehicles and pedestrians every night between 8pm and 8am.
The parapets need to be raised from 1.55m to 1.85m to allow the overhead line equipment that’ll power electric trains to run underneath.
Claire Monaghan, Network Rail senior project engineer, said: “We’re pleased to be starting the work to raise the parapets on the bridge at Peel Road in Thorntonhall.
“This element of the East Kilbride Enhancement project will take just over a month to complete, with traffic management measures in place every night to allow the team to work safely.
“Our thanks go to members of the community for their patience and understanding while we complete this vital work.”
The East Kilbride Enhancement project is part of a wider £140m investment at the centre of the Scottish Government’s ongoing strategy to decarbonise passengers services across Scotland’s Railway.
