Vandals who placed a large pole on the railway at a foot crossing on Windwhistle lane, Weston-super-Mare, have been condemned by Network Rail.  A passing train hit the pole, but luckily no-one was injured. The 4ft long, black metal pipe was placed pointing upwards between the boards of the crossing.  The line is heavily used by local passenger trains which travel at speeds of 60 mph, with occasional high speed trains also using the track. Robbie Burns, Network Rail’s Western Route Director, said: “The actions of these vandals could easily have resulted in the derailment of the train and even death.  I cannot stress enough how dangerous it is to place objects of any kind on railway lines.” The incident happened at 12.10am on Saturday 25 February, the train was the 21:49 Paddington to Exeter St Davids. The foot crossing has become a known hotspot for vandalism and trespass. Mr Burns added, “I urge local people to help us stop these people who stupidly put lives at risk.  If you know those responsible for this incident or see anyone trespassing on the tracks I urge you to contact the police.  Parents can also help by warning their children of the dangers of going near the railway lines.” Witnesses can contact the British transport police on 0800 405040 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555111.

About Network Rail

We own, operate and develop Britain's railway infrastructure; that's 20,000 miles of track, 30,000 bridges, tunnels and viaducts and the thousands of signals, level crossings and stations. We run 20 of the UK's largest stations while all the others, over 2,500, are run by the country's train operating companies.

Usually, there are almost five million journeys made in the UK and over 600 freight trains run on the network. People depend on Britain's railway for their daily commute, to visit friends and loved ones and to get them home safe every day. Our role is to deliver a safe and reliable railway, so we carefully manage and deliver thousands of projects every year that form part of the multi-billion pound Railway Upgrade Plan, to grow and expand the nation's railway network to respond to the tremendous growth and demand the railway has experienced - a doubling of passenger journeys over the past 20 years.
