Rail investment across Cambridgeshire and Norfolk continues this autumn.

Weekend engineering work across Cambridgeshire and parts of Norfolk is planned throughout October to deliver a range of improvements, renewals and maintenance to keep trains running safely punctually and efficiently for customers.

The railway in this region is already very busy, and with demand growing for both passenger services and heavy freight services via Ely, it’s important that investment and work on the rail infrastructure takes place to ensure services can continue to run smoothly.  

Engineers across a range of disciplines will therefore be out in force across Cambridgeshire throughout the weekends in October to maintain and improve the railway as part of a programme of planned engineering work.

Such general maintenance work, inspections, renewals and repairs are an important part of maintaining a safe and reliable railway for customers. This is particularly important as we continue to respond to and manage the ongoing impact of the hot summer, which has resulted in soil moisture deficit impacting the tracks across areas of north Cambridgeshire and Norfolk. 

The work will also require Chettisham level crossing on Lynn Road to temporary close to traffic at various times overnight and weekends throughout October and into early November with a diversion route in place for road users. 

The planned work has to be done when trains are not running for the safety of the maintenance teams and engineers to allow the following work to take place:

• Cambridge resignalling prep work renewing the signals between Cambridge North and Ely. 
• Station and platform work at Wymondham
• Rail renewals and repairs of points and crossovers
• Wheel timber renewals at Stonea Road bridge 
• Track rerailing, tamping and general maintenance
• Overhead line maintenance
• Vegetation management/clearance
• Drainage work/improvements
• Structures inspections/examinations
• Telecoms maintenance

Customers travelling through Cambridgeshire and parts of Norfolk during weekends in October are encouraged to check before travelling and to allow extra time to complete your journey.

GBR Anglia brings c2c, Greater Anglia and Network Rail Anglia together under one unified leadership team, aligning track and train more closely for a more joined-up railway delivering better customer journeys across the region.

Saturday 3 to Sunday 4 October 2026:

Rail replacement bus services will operate between Ely and Norwich on both days serving affected stations.

Saturday 10 to Sunday 11 October 2026

Buses replace trains between:

• - Thetford and Cambridge North
• - Cambridge North and Kings Lynn
• - Bury St Edmunds and Peterborough

Greater Anglia trains will continue to operate between Norwich and Thetford, and between Cambridge North and Stansted Airport, as well as between Ipswich and Cambridge.

Saturday 17 to Sunday 18 October 2026

Buses replace trains between:

• - Cambridge and Kings Lynn (via Ely)
• - Ely and Peterborough
• - Peterborough and Norwich

Greater Anglia trains will continue to operate between Ely and Norwich, and between Cambridge North and Stansted Airport / London, as well as between Ipswich and Cambridge. Trains will also continue to operate between Cambridge and Ipswich and between Ely and Ipswich.

Sunday 25 October 2026

Buses replace trains between:

• - Cambridge North and Audley End
• - Cambridge and Stansted Airport
• - Cambridge and Royston

Greater Anglia trains will continue to operate between Norwich and Cambridge North (connecting into buses between Cambridge North and Audley End), as well as between Audley End / Stansted Airport and London.

An amended Great Northern train service will run between Kings Lynn and Cambridge, and between Royston and London Kings Cross.

Saturday 31 October to Sunday 1 November 2026

Buses replace trains between:

• - Cambridge North and Kings Lynn
• - Cambridge North and Ely
• - Ely and Peterborough
• - Peterborough and Norwich (direct)
• - Peterborough and Cambridge (via Ely)

Greater Anglia trains will continue to operate between Norwich and Ely, and between Cambridge North and Stansted Airport / London, as well as Ipswich and Cambridge. Trains will also continue to operate between Ipswich and Ely.
