Rail improvement work for Cleghorn level crossing this Easter

Region & Route:
Scotland’s Railway: Scotland

Network Rail engineers will be delivering a £1m investment programme on the railway through Cleghorn level crossing in April and May.

Part of Network Rail’s UK-wide Railway Upgrade Plan, the improvement works will see over half-a-mile of track as well as the vehicle crossing units at Cleghorn renewed.

The crossing will be closed to vehicles from 9pm on Friday, March 30, until 10am on Sunday, April 15, to allow this vital work to take place.

During this time our engineers will be renewing the railway track and the level crossing as part of our log-term maintenance plan for the line between Glasgow and London – one of the busiest passenger and freight routes in Britain.

A second closure from 11pm on Saturday, May 5, until 8am Monday, May 7, will also be required for follow-up work.

Elsewhere on the west coast main line over the Easter weekend, engineers will also be renewing around half-a-mile of track at Carstairs as well as replacing track and drainage systems further south around Lockerbie.

A Network Rail spokesperson said: “The work we are undertaking is vital for the long-term future reliability of the west coast main line, which is one of the busiest in the country, and is part of our commitment to delivering the best railway Scotland has ever had.

“Our engineers will be working around-the-clock to complete this complex programme as quickly as possible. We understand the inconvenience these works will cause to some passengers, residents and motorists and we are working hard to keep disruption to a minimum.”

Network Rail engineers will be working around-the-clock over the bank holiday to deliver more than £23m of improvements across Scotland’s railway.

Over 2,500 staff will work around 40,000 hours on projects across the central belt, in the south west and in the north east of Scotland.

Nationally, Network Rail will be delivering more than 400 projects over Easter as part of a £118m investment across Britain.

Due to the complexity of the work these projects can’t be delivered without the short-term disruption to some services and more information can be found at www.nationalrail.co.uk

About Network Rail

We own, operate and develop Britain's railway infrastructure; that's 20,000 miles of track, 30,000 bridges, tunnels and viaducts and the thousands of signals, level crossings and stations. We run 20 of the UK's largest stations while all the others, over 2,500, are run by the country's train operating companies.

Usually, there are almost five million journeys made in the UK and over 600 freight trains run on the network. People depend on Britain's railway for their daily commute, to visit friends and loved ones and to get them home safe every day. Our role is to deliver a safe and reliable railway, so we carefully manage and deliver thousands of projects every year that form part of the multi-billion pound Railway Upgrade Plan, to grow and expand the nation's railway network to respond to the tremendous growth and demand the railway has experienced - a doubling of passenger journeys over the past 20 years.
