Queen Street redevelopment adds a touch of glass

Network Rail is about to begin the next phase of the redevelopment of Glasgow Queen street with the installation of the new glass façade at the West George Street side of the station.
Between now and September, 310 glass panes will be installed across the 21-metre-high structure to create the new frontage of the city station.
Covering an area of 734m2 and weighing 33,030kg in total, the floor-to-ceiling glazing will gradually bring to life the striking design of the new exterior, from both inside and outside the station.
Julie Ferrie, project manager for Glasgow Queen Street station redevelopment, said: “Installing the new glass marks another significant and highly visible milestone in the redevelopment work.
“Glass is a material with an enduring association with Glasgow Queen Street, given the A-Listed, Victorian barrel roof and gables.
“Visitors to the station will appreciate that the Victorian roof has been thoughtfully incorporated into the new structure and that it also remains fully exposed from the station platforms. We’re confident the new glass façade will enjoy the same enduring appeal.
“On completion next spring, the station will not only provide a contemporary and distinctive building, but will also transform the passenger experience for the millions of people who use the station”.
The new glass-fronted concourse; almost double the size of the existing space, is being built to accommodate the projected increase in passenger numbers at Scotland’s third-busiest station.
In addition to the glazing, work currently underway at Glasgow Queen Street includes extensions to platforms two and three, which are on track to finish by 29th July, enabling electric trains of up to eight carriages to use the station,

The £120m redevelopment of Glasgow Queen Street station is part of the Edinburgh Glasgow Improvement Programme (EGIP) – a Scottish Government investment in the railway infrastructure across central Scotland.
Glasgow Queen Street station opened in 1842, with the Victorian glass roof constructed three decades later and completed in 1878, which is now a category A listed structure.
