Queen Street platform extensions on-track for July

Passengers are being reminded that platforms 2 and 3 at Glasgow Queen Street station will be closed during July while engineers work to extend the tracks for longer, greener electric trains.

Part of the £120m project to redevelop and expand Scotland’s third-busiest station, the 26metre extensions will allow longer Class-385 trains to use the platforms – meaning more seats for customers.

Platforms 2 and 3 will close from Sunday, June 30, and reopen for the start of service on Monday, July 29.

During the closure, engineers will lay new track and connect it to the existing infrastructure, extend overhead power lines, install coping stones, rebuild sections of the platform walls and carry-out re-surfacing works.

The majority of train services into the high level station will be unaffected during the month-long closure. However, there will be alterations to some services, on the following routes:

• Glasgow Queen Street – Anniesland
• Glasgow Queen Street – Edinburgh (via Cumbernauld & Falkirk Grahamston)
• Glasgow Queen Street – Aberdeen
• Glasgow Queen Street – Inverness

Kevin McClelland, Network Rail route delivery director for infrastructure projects, said: “We are completing the platform extensions as quickly as possible for customers and have worked hard with our ScotRail colleagues to reduce disruption to services to a minimum.

“The new station will transform travel through Glasgow Queen Street – with longer, greener electric trains and a brighter, more modern station building.”

Ahead of the platform works there will also be some changes to facilities at the station.

From June 23, the station toilets and waiting room will relocate from their current location at the east side of the station to within the former North Hanover Street car park. From June 30, the lost property and left luggage office will also relocate to North Hanover Street.

Once the extension of platforms 2 and 3 is complete, a further phase of work will take place between mid-September and mid-October to extend platforms 4 and 5.
