PUTTING THE PIECES OF THE PUZZLE IN PLACE

Region & Route:
| Southern
Network Rail has donated 30 feet of rail and all of its components to Peter Jackman, March resident, to complete his guard van project. Mr Jackman is restoring an old railway guard van but it can only take pride of place at March Museum if there are tracks for it to rest on.  That’s where Network Rail fits into the puzzle. Network Rail and its rail renewal contractor, GrantRail has a yard in March where it stores and deconstructs track sections for recycling.  Mr Jackman approached Network Rail and the lengths that he needed were put to one side. Jon Wiseman, Network Rail General Manager said: “We aim to recycle as much of our used materials as possible, but when we read about Mr Jackman we knew we would be able to save him enough track to see his dream realised.  The track has been taken apart and I am sure Mr Jackman and his colleagues will have great fun putting it back together again.” Photo Opportunity:  Network Rail will be helping Mr Jackman load the donated materials on Thursday 29 January, 10am at the GrantRail Offices, Southdown Yard.  Mr Jackman will also receive a lesson from our track team on how to put it back together.  To have a go and photograph this event, please contact Jenny Sacre on 020 7904 4043.

About Network Rail

We own, operate and develop Britain's railway infrastructure; that's 20,000 miles of track, 30,000 bridges, tunnels and viaducts and the thousands of signals, level crossings and stations. We run 20 of the UK's largest stations while all the others, over 2,500, are run by the country's train operating companies.

Usually, there are almost five million journeys made in the UK and over 600 freight trains run on the network. People depend on Britain's railway for their daily commute, to visit friends and loved ones and to get them home safe every day. Our role is to deliver a safe and reliable railway, so we carefully manage and deliver thousands of projects every year that form part of the multi-billion pound Railway Upgrade Plan, to grow and expand the nation's railway network to respond to the tremendous growth and demand the railway has experienced - a doubling of passenger journeys over the past 20 years.
