Popular East Yorkshire footpath to reopen as Network Rail completes work to install safety equipment

Region & Route:
| Eastern

A footpath which has been closed to the public will fully reopen at 17:00 on Friday, 5 October as Network Rail has finished installing monitoring equipment.

The footpath, which runs between Hessle and North Ferriby, has been closed to allow Network Rail engineers to install equipment to monitor ground movement after a crack was found next to the railway.

Network Rail has now completed this work and the footpath will reopen. The section of footpath where Network Rail engineers have been working will be relaid before it reopens. The ground movement will continue to be monitored.

Rob McIntosh, Route Managing Director for Network Rail, said: “We’d like to thank residents for their patience whilst this equipment has been installed and we are delighted that the footpath can reopen.

“We understand that this is a popular footpath and we apologise for any inconvenience the closure has caused. Safety is our top priority and this was work vital to keep trains running reliably and safely.”

Network Rail is currently working on plans to carry out a permanent fix with further details to be announced in due course.

About Network Rail

We own, operate and develop Britain's railway infrastructure; that's 20,000 miles of track, 30,000 bridges, tunnels and viaducts and the thousands of signals, level crossings and stations. We run 20 of the UK's largest stations while all the others, over 2,500, are run by the country's train operating companies.

Usually, there are almost five million journeys made in the UK and over 600 freight trains run on the network. People depend on Britain's railway for their daily commute, to visit friends and loved ones and to get them home safe every day. Our role is to deliver a safe and reliable railway, so we carefully manage and deliver thousands of projects every year that form part of the multi-billion pound Railway Upgrade Plan, to grow and expand the nation's railway network to respond to the tremendous growth and demand the railway has experienced - a doubling of passenger journeys over the past 20 years.
