PLANS FINALISED FOR NORBURY STATION UPGRADE

Region & Route:
| Southern: Wessex

Thousands of passengers who use Norbury station every day are in line for better journeys after plans were finalised for an upgrade of facilities.

The improvements, which are being funded through a combination of the national stations improvement programme and Network Rail, include:

- Revamp of the existing ticket office, including laying new flooring, painting and installation of new windows, to improve the overall station environment for passengers
- Installation of a more accessible ticket window to make it easier for those with reduced mobility
- Conversion of the disused waiting shelter on platform 1 into a fully enclosed waiting room, including improved customer information and heating, making it more comfortable for passengers to wait for their train
- Refurbishment of the platform canopies and replacing the roof above the ramps which lead to the platforms
- Resurfacing of platform 1

Mark Ruddy, Network Rail’s route director for Sussex, said: “We want to attract more people to use the railway. This means we need to give passengers the end-to-end journey experience they expect, including a better station environment and modern facilities.

“We also need to make sure the investment choices we make now and in the future are the right ones. The improvements planned for Norbury balance the need to provide facilities which will make a real difference for passengers with the requirement to deliver a value-for-money scheme within the budget available. Once complete, the refurbished station will better meet the needs of passengers and businesses in Norbury.”

Chris Brooks, Southern’s head of stations said: “We’re delighted that our passengers at Norbury will enjoy a much better experience when using the station once the NSIP work has been completed. These improvements really will make a positive and lasting difference.”

He added: “It’s a double win because Network Rail is investing an additional £1.4m in renewal work which will compliment the NSIP improvements perfectly, and will ensure the station is good enough to meet the expectations our passengers have - and deserve.”

The final work schedule is still being finalised, but is expected to start later in 2011 with completion by early 2012.

Notes to editors

The national stations improvement programme (NSIP) is a £150m Department for Transport-backed rail industry scheme to enhance 150 medium sized stations in England and Wales. Typically the initiative responds to the key needs of passengers, to provide safe, secure and comfortable stations, and provide suitable information.

About Network Rail

We own, operate and develop Britain's railway infrastructure; that's 20,000 miles of track, 30,000 bridges, tunnels and viaducts and the thousands of signals, level crossings and stations. We run 20 of the UK's largest stations while all the others, over 2,500, are run by the country's train operating companies.

Usually, there are almost five million journeys made in the UK and over 600 freight trains run on the network. People depend on Britain's railway for their daily commute, to visit friends and loved ones and to get them home safe every day. Our role is to deliver a safe and reliable railway, so we carefully manage and deliver thousands of projects every year that form part of the multi-billion pound Railway Upgrade Plan, to grow and expand the nation's railway network to respond to the tremendous growth and demand the railway has experienced - a doubling of passenger journeys over the past 20 years.
