Plan ahead for weekend engineering work in March
- Region & Route:
- Eastern: Anglia
Passengers are being encouraged to check before travelling as weekend engineering work in March will affect all routes and services to/from London Liverpool Street.
Essential weekend engineering work in March will deliver vital maintenance, renewals and repairs to keep very busy sections of the railway running efficiently and safely for all rail users.
This work will include the closure of London Liverpool Street mainline station (including the concourse) for five days in March, affecting weekend passengers using Greater Anglia services into the mainline station from Southend Victoria/Ingatestone, and from Cheshunt via Broxbourne. Some c2c services that use Liverpool Street station will also be affected.
The Elizabeth line will see closures between Stratford and Shenfield during weekends in March, as well as London Overground Weaver line services from Enfield Town/ Cheshunt and Chingford into London Liverpool Street station.
These works are being done to keep the infrastructure running reliably and safely for all rail users. They include:
- Track and rail renewal near Ilford station and Gidea Park,
- Roof renewal including roof drainage improvements at London Liverpool Street station,
- Track drainage works,
- Station and/or platform works at Stratford, Chadwell Heath, Harold Wood, Manor Park, Upminster, Rayleigh, Wickford and Hockley,
- Infrastructure work at Ilford depot,
- Overhead line work and overhead line redundant structure removals,
- Surveys and inspections of structures/canopies/retaining walls/culverts/tunnels and brickwork repairs,
- Vegetation management and litter clearance along the railway,
- Track maintenance and treatment (including tamping, rail grinding and ballast cleaning),
- General drainage and infrastructure maintenance.
Katie Frost, Network Rail's route director for Anglia, said: "I'm sorry that our work will impact weekend passenger journeys in March.
"There is never a good time to close the railway, but our planned work will deliver an extensive amount of renewals, repairs, maintenance and surveys on these busy, well used routes into London Liverpool Street.
"Much of the work needs to be done while trains are not running to keep our staff safe, and we are maximising the time we have to do as much as we can."
Martin Beable, managing director for Greater Anglia, said: "These projects will help improve and maintain very busy parts of the network, which will help to maintain our high standards of punctuality and reliability.
“Passengers should check before they travel and allow more time for their journey. We would like to thank customers for their patience and understanding while Network Rail carry out this work.”
Trish Ashton, TfL’s Director of Rail, said: "We’re sorry for any disruption caused by weekend engineering work impacting London Overground and Elizabeth line services during March. These planned works are essential to help keep our services safe and reliable. Customers are advised to ‘check before they travel’ using the TfL Go app or at TfL.gov.uk, and allow a little extra time for their journeys."

About Network Rail
We own, operate and develop Britain's railway infrastructure; that's 20,000 miles of track, 30,000 bridges, tunnels and viaducts and the thousands of signals, level crossings and stations. We run 20 of the UK's largest stations while all the others, over 2,500, are run by the country's train operating companies.
Usually, there are almost five million journeys made in the UK and over 600 freight trains run on the network. People depend on Britain's railway for their daily commute, to visit friends and loved ones and to get them home safe every day. Our role is to deliver a safe and reliable railway, so we carefully manage and deliver thousands of projects every year that form part of the multi-billion pound Railway Upgrade Plan, to grow and expand the nation's railway network to respond to the tremendous growth and demand the railway has experienced - a doubling of passenger journeys over the past 20 years.
