Plan ahead: Electrification works between Haymarket and Dalmeny in January
- Region & Route:
- Scotland’s Railway: Scotland
Rail passengers are being encouraged to plan ahead for journeys between Edinburgh and Fife over nine days in January, while essential engineering work to electrify the line takes place.
As part of the Fife electrification project, the upgrades are scheduled for January 17 to January 25 between Haymarket and Dalmeny. Due to the location of the work, some train services that normally operate through Fife will see changes throughout the works.
Rail replacement buses and alternative rail routes for some services have been agreed with train operating companies ScotRail, Caledonian Sleeper, LNER and Cross Country. Further information on travel advice to customers and details on alternative transport plans will be provided in the coming weeks. Passengers are being urged to plan journeys during this period in advance and to allow extra time where needed.
The electrification work across the Fife network is the latest phase of the Scottish Government’s wider plans to decarbonise passenger services across Scotland’s Railway and enable cleaner, quieter and more sustainable journeys.
Catherine Hall, strategy and investment director at Network Rail Scotland said: “Carrying out this important work to enable the electrification of the Fife lines is a significant step forward in our plans for a better and decarbonised railway for Scotland. This will help to pave the way for the introduction of battery-electric trains on these routes which will provide greater capacity and reliability, and more accessible, comfortable, and sustainable journeys.
“Delivering a project of this size and complexity takes time, collaboration, and a huge amount of technical expertise and we would also like to thank our lineside neighbours for their patience and understanding while these works are being carried out.
“We know that engineering activity can be disruptive, and we’re really grateful for the continued understanding shown by local communities and our passengers, particularly those who will have to plan their journeys in advance while these vital works take place.”
During the planned closure, Network Rail will also undertake a series of important track re-railing across the route, allowing teams to carry out work as efficiently as possible, while reducing future travel disruption for passengers.

About Network Rail
We own, operate and develop Britain's railway infrastructure; that's 20,000 miles of track, 30,000 bridges, tunnels and viaducts and the thousands of signals, level crossings and stations. We run 20 of the UK's largest stations while all the others, over 2,500, are run by the country's train operating companies.
Usually, there are almost five million journeys made in the UK and over 600 freight trains run on the network. People depend on Britain's railway for their daily commute, to visit friends and loved ones and to get them home safe every day. Our role is to deliver a safe and reliable railway, so we carefully manage and deliver thousands of projects every year that form part of the multi-billion pound Railway Upgrade Plan, to grow and expand the nation's railway network to respond to the tremendous growth and demand the railway has experienced - a doubling of passenger journeys over the past 20 years.
