Piccadilly passengers’ advice ahead of major Manchester weekend events

Region & Route:
North West & Central
| North West & Central: North West

Parklife, Soccer Aid and gig goers travelling through Manchester Piccadilly are advised to plan ahead this weekend.

Almost 200,000 people are estimated to attend the events at Heaton Park and Old Trafford between 14-15 June. Additionally, Catfish and the Bottlemen, and Chris Brown concerts are expected to bring in huge crowds over the weekend on Friday (13 June) and Sunday (15 June).

However, people planning to travel through Manchester Piccadilly are being advised to plan their journeys in advance and know when their last train home is.

Passengers are urged to check www.nationalrail.co.uk and follow the advice of their train operator so they have a firm plan on how to get home.

Railway staff and volunteers will be available to keep people safely on the move.

Over the weekend, the station will be closed after the last train has left the station, and will reopen when service starts again the next morning.

Margaret Edge, Manchester Piccadilly’s station delivery manager, said: “We want to make sure everyone going to Parklife, Soccer Aid, and gigs across Manchester enjoys themselves, and we’ll be here to make sure you can travel safely by train.

“Please plan your journey in advance and know when your last train is. The station will be closing overnight, so if you need to travel by train to get home, planning ahead on National Rail Enquiries is essential.”

Network Rail's advice between 13-15 June is:

  • Plan your journey – especially how you will get home - at www.nationalrail.co.uk
  • Allow extra time – long queues to access platforms are expected
  • Don't rely on later trains home - they will be limited and very busy
  • Treat all staff at the station with kindness and respect

About Network Rail

We own, operate and develop Britain's railway infrastructure; that's 20,000 miles of track, 30,000 bridges, tunnels and viaducts and the thousands of signals, level crossings and stations. We run 20 of the UK's largest stations while all the others, over 2,500, are run by the country's train operating companies.

Usually, there are almost five million journeys made in the UK and over 600 freight trains run on the network. People depend on Britain's railway for their daily commute, to visit friends and loved ones and to get them home safe every day. Our role is to deliver a safe and reliable railway, so we carefully manage and deliver thousands of projects every year that form part of the multi-billion pound Railway Upgrade Plan, to grow and expand the nation's railway network to respond to the tremendous growth and demand the railway has experienced - a doubling of passenger journeys over the past 20 years.
