Region & Route:
Scotland’s Railway: Scotland
Time: 13.00hrs, Tuesday 10 July Event: Up to 2,000 teenagers are expected to attend a free rail safety event over two days on Tuesday 10 July and Wednesday 11 July. A huge range of activities are planned, including: athletics, boxing, bungee running, a climbing wall, cricket, DJ workshop, professional football coaching, football freestyling, gaming, rowing, Judo, kick boxing, motor biking, a surfing simulator and wrestling. Location: All Saints High School, Ryehill Road, Glasgow Teenagers in Glasgow will have the chance to participate in more than 20 sports, dance and music activities – including football training by Rangers and Celtic coaches – as part of No Messin’ Live! 2007, a two-day event arranged by Network Rail. The free event, at All Saints High School, Glasgow, aims to raise awareness of railway safety among young people through engaging and interesting activities. The aim is to discourage trespass on the railway in Glasgow, where this is a particular problem.
  • Railway trespass in Scotland between July ’05 and July ’06 amounted to 1,182 incidents. Between July ’06 and July ’07 this rose to 1,261 incidents (up 7%). The vast majority of railway trespass is carried out by youths of school age.
  • The previous year saw a rise of 21%.
  • During the same period, railway vandalism has fallen slightly from 551 incidents to 440.
  • Trains striking or being struck by objects has fallen from 322 incidents to 297 – however this still amounts to almost one incident per day which potentially endangers lives. Again, these incidents also rise during the summer holidays.
Print and broadcast journalists, photographers and camera crews are invited to confirm their attendance to Craig Bowman on 0141 555 4108 or 07917 775 805. More information available on request. Notes to Editors: Find out more: http://www.no-messin.com

About Network Rail

We own, operate and develop Britain's railway infrastructure; that's 20,000 miles of track, 30,000 bridges, tunnels and viaducts and the thousands of signals, level crossings and stations. We run 20 of the UK's largest stations while all the others, over 2,500, are run by the country's train operating companies.

Usually, there are almost five million journeys made in the UK and over 600 freight trains run on the network. People depend on Britain's railway for their daily commute, to visit friends and loved ones and to get them home safe every day. Our role is to deliver a safe and reliable railway, so we carefully manage and deliver thousands of projects every year that form part of the multi-billion pound Railway Upgrade Plan, to grow and expand the nation's railway network to respond to the tremendous growth and demand the railway has experienced - a doubling of passenger journeys over the past 20 years.
