Passengers warned of escalator closures at Manchester Piccadilly

Region & Route:
North West & Central: North West

Passengers are advised to allow extra time when travelling through Manchester Piccadilly station this weekend as three escalators are closed for emergency repairs.

Engineers are working to repair the escalators that take passengers:

  • From the taxi rank/Fairfield street entrance to the mezzanine level.
  • From the mezzanine level to the main concourse.
  • From platform 13 up to the over bridge.

All three escalators have experienced different issues at the same time in an unlucky coincidence.

Passengers who may have difficulty using the stairs are advised to use the station or Metrolink lifts.

Scott Green, head of route stations for Network Rail’s North West route, said: "I understand this is frustrating for passengers impacted by the escalator closures and appreciate your patience and understanding as we work to resolve the issues. If possible, please allow extra time for your journey. Should you need any assistance, please speak to a member of staff.

"It's certainly unusual for three escalators to be closed at the same time. The escalators will reopen as soon as they are safely repaired."

Two of the escalators require the steps replacing, while the other has an internal issue.

Step-free access from Fairfield street to the station concourse, and between platform 13 to the over bridge are available via station lifts. For customers entering via Metrolink please use the lift on the Metrolink mezzanine level.

About Network Rail

We own, operate and develop Britain's railway infrastructure; that's 20,000 miles of track, 30,000 bridges, tunnels and viaducts and the thousands of signals, level crossings and stations. We run 20 of the UK's largest stations while all the others, over 2,500, are run by the country's train operating companies.

Usually, there are almost five million journeys made in the UK and over 600 freight trains run on the network. People depend on Britain's railway for their daily commute, to visit friends and loved ones and to get them home safe every day. Our role is to deliver a safe and reliable railway, so we carefully manage and deliver thousands of projects every year that form part of the multi-billion pound Railway Upgrade Plan, to grow and expand the nation's railway network to respond to the tremendous growth and demand the railway has experienced - a doubling of passenger journeys over the past 20 years.
