Passengers urged to plan ahead for Easter

Region & Route:
Scotland’s Railway: Scotland

Passengers are being advised to plan their travel during the Easter holiday as engineering work continues on Scotland’s Railway.

While most of the network will be unaffected, significant work to improve reliability and resilience at Carstairs will be taking place during the holiday period.

This will mean there is no route through Carstairs Junction to and from Edinburgh Waverley or Glasgow Central via the West Coast Mainline during this time.

Bridge installation work in Motherwell as part of the Ravenscraig Masterplan Development will also mean ScotRail services from Glasgow Central to Lanark will be diverted via Holytown from April 1 to 9.

Scotland’s Railway is advising passengers to visit National Rail Enquiries – National Rail Enquiries – or their train operator’s website to check their journey before travelling.

Liam Sumpter, Route Director for Network Rail Scotland, said: “Our engineers will be working hard to deliver vital projects over the Easter holiday.

“Our Carstairs works are designed to improve the railway so that we can provide a better and more reliable service for our passengers and freight customers.

“At Ravenscraig, our work is helping to regenerate the area and the new bridge will link communities by providing connectivity between the M74 and M8 motorways.

“If you are planning to travel this Easter, please remember to check beforehand.”

About Network Rail

We own, operate and develop Britain's railway infrastructure; that's 20,000 miles of track, 30,000 bridges, tunnels and viaducts and the thousands of signals, level crossings and stations. We run 20 of the UK's largest stations while all the others, over 2,500, are run by the country's train operating companies.

Usually, there are almost five million journeys made in the UK and over 600 freight trains run on the network. People depend on Britain's railway for their daily commute, to visit friends and loved ones and to get them home safe every day. Our role is to deliver a safe and reliable railway, so we carefully manage and deliver thousands of projects every year that form part of the multi-billion pound Railway Upgrade Plan, to grow and expand the nation's railway network to respond to the tremendous growth and demand the railway has experienced - a doubling of passenger journeys over the past 20 years.
