Passengers urged to plan ahead as Ayr Station Hotel fire continues to burn

Region & Route:
Scotland’s Railway: Scotland

No train services are expected to run to or from Ayr station over the next few days as engineers work to assess when the station can re-open, following a major fire at the neighbouring hotel last night.

Firefighters are still fighting the fire and Scotland’s Railway is working closely with the emergency services and affected train operators.

Initial indications are that our engineers won’t be able to access the area for at least 36 hours to assess the damage to the railway.

Initially, ScotRail’s services between Glasgow Central and Ayr will terminate and start back from Irvine and services between Stranraer and Ayr will terminate and start back from Girvan.

Passengers are being advised to check their journey with ScotRail for the latest advice and alternative transport arrangements.

Liam Sumpter, route director, Network Rail Scotland said: “Our team is on-site at Ayr station and working with the emergency services, including the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service,  who are still fighting the hotel fire.

“It’s a developing situation and unfortunately, no trains will run while we assess when the station can re-open.”

Notes to Editors

  • South Ayrshire Council has been in the process of producing an options review report on the future of the hotel site. Network Rail Scotland has played a full and active role in this process, alongside other partners on the strategic governance group.
  • Network Rail will continue to work closely with partners to help find the right solutions for future of the hotel site and wider community.

About Network Rail

We own, operate and develop Britain's railway infrastructure; that's 20,000 miles of track, 30,000 bridges, tunnels and viaducts and the thousands of signals, level crossings and stations. We run 20 of the UK's largest stations while all the others, over 2,500, are run by the country's train operating companies.

Usually, there are almost five million journeys made in the UK and over 600 freight trains run on the network. People depend on Britain's railway for their daily commute, to visit friends and loved ones and to get them home safe every day. Our role is to deliver a safe and reliable railway, so we carefully manage and deliver thousands of projects every year that form part of the multi-billion pound Railway Upgrade Plan, to grow and expand the nation's railway network to respond to the tremendous growth and demand the railway has experienced - a doubling of passenger journeys over the past 20 years.
