Passengers travelling between Saltburn and Redcar urged to check before they travel

Essential improvement work to create a more reliable railway for North East passengers is set to take place at the end of July, with rail passengers being urged to plan ahead.

The vital engineering work between Middlesbrough and Saltburn will see the renewal of switches and crossings, more commonly known as ‘points’ - the equipment which allows trains to move from one piece of track to another.

Due to the nature of the work, which requires the track to be removed from the ground, there will be no trains running between Saltburn and Redcar Central between Friday 28 July and the morning of Wednesday 2 August, with a bus replacement service in operation. During the engineering works there will be more than 225 bus services in operation between Saltburn and Redcar Central and 150 express buses between Saltburn and Middlesbrough, with all timetables available at northernrailway.co.uk /travel/improvement-works

Chris Gee, head of operations and performance at Network Rail, said: “As part of our Railway Upgrade Plan, we’re investing in the railway to make it more reliable.

“These improvements mean there will be some significant changes to services while the work is being carried out and passengers are advised to check their journeys in advance.”

Mike Paterson, Regional Director at Northern, said: “This is vital work between Middlesbrough and Saltburn and we have worked closely with Network Rail to minimise the disruption to our customers.

“Modernisation is happening across the railway in the north of England and these works are another example of the investment being committed to projects designed to future proof the network.”

Mike added: “Unfortunately the line closure coincides with the Saltburn Food Festival.  Efforts have been made by Northern and Network Rail to alter the timing of the engineering work, but this was not possible due to freight commitments on the line.

“To help people get to and from the festival we have doubled number of rail replacement bus services and will have people on the ground to assist our customers.”

Passengers are being advised to check nationalrail.co.uk before they travel and to allow extra time for their journeys.
