Passengers in Yorkshire urged to check before travelling as Storm Babet having severe impact on railway in the region

Network Rail and train operators are continuing to urge passengers in Yorkshire to check before travelling as flooding and high winds brought by Storm Babet are causing disruption to services.

Network Rail teams have been working around the clock to try and keep disruption to a minimum, including removing trees which have fallen onto the railway tracks.

However, the high levels of rainfall and strong winds are having a significant impact on services, with the situation changing rapidly.

Flooding and debris on the track has affected dozens of routes across Yorkshire, including trains to London and from Scotland, with some routes closed completely, and trains having to run at severely reduced speeds on others.

Passengers who plan on travelling via train today are being urged to keep checking for the latest updates via National Rail Enquiries or with their train operator as there are a number of ongoing incidents.

Matt Rice, Route Director for Network Rail’s North & East route, said: “Our teams are working hard to keep passengers moving safely but we are currently tackling a number of weather-related incidents.

“Flooding on the line is a major problem and we’re sorry for the impact which this is having.

“If you are planning on travelling today, please keep up to date with your journey by visiting National Rail Enquiries or checking with your train operator.”
