Passengers in Yorkshire urged to check before they travel as work takes place to the railway

Region & Route:
| Eastern

Network Rail is urging passengers travelling between Yorkshire and Huddersfield, Stalybridge and Manchester to check before they travel as work takes place to the railway.

On Saturday, 16 and Sunday, 17 June, Network Rail engineers will be working round the clock to carry out work to Standedge Aqueduct in Marsden, which includes dismantling the bridge deck of the Grade II listed aqueduct and installing a temporary structure. A new bridge deck will be installed at a later date.

Due to the nature of the work, fewer services are able to run and diversionary routes are in place, as well as some bus replacement services.

Passengers using the route over the weekend are strongly advised to plan their journey, allow additional time and to check before they travel with their train operator or via National Rail Enquiries.

Rob McIntosh, Route Managing Director at Network Rail, said: “The work we are carrying out over the weekend will impact on services and we'd like to apologise for any disruption and  inconvenience which this causes. We'd like to thank passengers for their patience whilst this work is carried out.

"Network Rail engineers will dismantle the bridge deck on the historic Grade II listed structure and will install a new temporary structure. Once the upgrade is complete, passengers will benefit from a more modern railway.

"We'd strongly advise passengers to allow additional time for their journey and to check before they travel."

About Network Rail

We own, operate and develop Britain's railway infrastructure; that's 20,000 miles of track, 30,000 bridges, tunnels and viaducts and the thousands of signals, level crossings and stations. We run 20 of the UK's largest stations while all the others, over 2,500, are run by the country's train operating companies.

Usually, there are almost five million journeys made in the UK and over 600 freight trains run on the network. People depend on Britain's railway for their daily commute, to visit friends and loved ones and to get them home safe every day. Our role is to deliver a safe and reliable railway, so we carefully manage and deliver thousands of projects every year that form part of the multi-billion pound Railway Upgrade Plan, to grow and expand the nation's railway network to respond to the tremendous growth and demand the railway has experienced - a doubling of passenger journeys over the past 20 years.
