PASSENGERS IN SAFE HANDS AT EDINBURGH WAVERLEY STATION

Region & Route:
Scotland’s Railway: Scotland
Edinburgh Waverley station, owned and operated by Network Rail, has retained its status as a Secure Station. It once again surpassed the standards set by The Department for Transport, in partnership with the British Transport Police and the crime prevention charity, Crime Concern. In order to receive the endorsement, the station underwent a rigorous inspection from the British Transport Police.  The review assessed aspects such as station design, station management, crime management and passenger perceptions. The station scored well on all counts and was specifically commended for its responsible ‘lost child’ policy.  This policy was developed by Network Rail to ensure that all the station occupants, including the Train Operating Companies, the cleaning contractors and the commercial tenants, work together as a team when trying to reunite unaccompanied children with their parents. The latest statistics show that overall crime in the station has fallen by 17% during the last six months, compared with the same period last year. Station Manager, Juliet Donnachie, said: “This ‘Secure Stations’ award provides assurance for staff and passengers that their safety and security are Network Rail’s top priorities.  We are not complacent however, and will continue to work closely with the British Transport Police and our station partners to maintain and develop these high standards.”

About Network Rail

We own, operate and develop Britain's railway infrastructure; that's 20,000 miles of track, 30,000 bridges, tunnels and viaducts and the thousands of signals, level crossings and stations. We run 20 of the UK's largest stations while all the others, over 2,500, are run by the country's train operating companies.

Usually, there are almost five million journeys made in the UK and over 600 freight trains run on the network. People depend on Britain's railway for their daily commute, to visit friends and loved ones and to get them home safe every day. Our role is to deliver a safe and reliable railway, so we carefully manage and deliver thousands of projects every year that form part of the multi-billion pound Railway Upgrade Plan, to grow and expand the nation's railway network to respond to the tremendous growth and demand the railway has experienced - a doubling of passenger journeys over the past 20 years.
