Passengers in East Yorkshire reminded to check before they travel this Easter

Region & Route:

Network Rail is reminding passengers travelling between Hull, Goole and Selby this Easter to check before they travel as work takes place to upgrade the signalling as part of the Great North Rail Project

The project, which will help increase the reliability and performance of the railway, is progressing but has been delayed from the original plan to be brought into use at Easter; however Network Rail engineers will still carry out work to the signalling system over the Easter weekend.

Due to the nature of the work, no trains will be able to run on the line between Hull, Goole and Selby on Saturday, 31 March and Sunday, 1 and Monday, 2 April and bus replacement services will be in operation. Passengers wishing to travel are advised to allow additional time for their journey and check before they travel via National Rail Enquiries.

Rob McIntosh, Route Managing Director at Network Rail, said: “Over the Easter weekend, control of the signalling was due to move from local, lineside signal boxes to Network Rail’s state of the art Rail Operating Centre in York, however this phase of the project has now been postponed.

“This is a major project and Network Rail engineers will still be out on the ground working over the Easter weekend. When the new signalling is commissioned, it will create a more modern and reliable railway which meets the needs of the communities and economies our railway serves.

“The work is taking place at this time as this is when fewer people travel but we appreciate that this can still impact on passengers, so we’d like to apologise in advance for any inconvenience caused. The best advice we can give is to check before you travel and allow additional time for your journey.”

Adam Fairclough, Head of Customer Experience for TransPennine Express, commented: “The work taking place over Easter will create improvements for rail customers travelling on the route between Selby and Hull.

“The work will mean changes to our services and customers are advised to plan their journeys and check before they travel at: www.nationalrail.co.uk.”

Paul Barnfield, Regional Director at Northern, said: “We understand engineering work is frustrating for our customers, but it is vital if we are to modernise the railway, making it more reliable and more efficient.

“We have worked closely with our partners across the rail industry to reduce potential disruption to our customers and have arranged replacement transport to help people get where they need to be during the Easter weekend.”

About Network Rail

We own, operate and develop Britain's railway infrastructure; that's 20,000 miles of track, 30,000 bridges, tunnels and viaducts and the thousands of signals, level crossings and stations. We run 20 of the UK's largest stations while all the others, over 2,500, are run by the country's train operating companies.

Usually, there are almost five million journeys made in the UK and over 600 freight trains run on the network. People depend on Britain's railway for their daily commute, to visit friends and loved ones and to get them home safe every day. Our role is to deliver a safe and reliable railway, so we carefully manage and deliver thousands of projects every year that form part of the multi-billion pound Railway Upgrade Plan, to grow and expand the nation's railway network to respond to the tremendous growth and demand the railway has experienced - a doubling of passenger journeys over the past 20 years.
